Mercy Thompson's World

I've been reading the first few books in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs these past few days.

Some of the things talked about like vampires, werewolves and fae I have a pretty good understanding of through folk tales, fiction books, movies and TV series. Other things, I'm learning lots about!

Some of the things I'm learning about are now also things I've Googled.
What does a coyote look like exactly, or a VW Rabbit, and oh yeah - how about a map of the area the stories are set in?!

As I'm looking these things up, I figured why not store the links / photos / descriptions in one easy place. And where better to store something than here, my very own blog!

Coyote
First, of course there's Mercy. She's a walker. Something I've never heard of before. Patricia Briggs' website links to a forum (which I just discovered about 10 minutes ago... Oh Bliss !!!) that has a page with lots of info on walkers. Basically - she can shapeshift/change from human to coyote and back in an instant.

So, coyotes. Right... Sort of like dogs but wild, was pretty much all I knew about coyotes. Thanks to Wikipedia's article on the Coyote, I now know a bit more. This incredibly awesome coyote picture is from that same article.

Next... a Volkswagen Rabbit. Sure I know Volkswagens. I may not be German, but Dad used to drive a Volkswagen once upon a time. The VW Rabbit I didn't know. Turns out it's just the American version of the Volkswagen Golf. Thank you once again Google and Wikipedia. And hey wait, that´s the same car Dad used to own. Small world!

Then of course there's the area the story is set in. Patricia Briggs' website has a map of the area, however I wanted a map showing the surrounding area as well. Found this map on the C& R Resources website. Turns out the Three Cities are Kennewick, Richland and Pasco with their very own Tri-Cities website.

One other thing I'm noticing about Patricia Briggs' work is that I'm reading with a notepad next to my book. I used to write down lots of interesting things when I read Linda Fairstein books, and I'm doing the same thing now. Cool quotations, names of authors, things I want to learn more about...

More on Mercy's world to come as I read more of the books, I'm sure. Am currently reading the 3rd book in the series, after spending most of today (hey, it was kinda cold and very windy, I have an excuse!) reading/finishing book number 2.
