Love this! Seriously squealed when I watched this!

My Inner Geek Rejoices

I know, I know... It's been around for quite some time and I'm only discovering it now... I'm late to the party! But... That doesn't mean I can't gush about it! Retro Phase Shift is a science fiction blog with lots of posts about (just to name a few shows) Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Defiance, Babylon 5 and Torchwood. Just reading the names of some of my favourite shows and knowing that others enjoy them too, makes me happy. Yes, really. (Is this a good moment to insert an "oh, the feels" comment? No? Ah, okay...) Reading some of the posts on this blog is even better than just reading about the blog's existence. Take for instance 4 Good Entry Points to Big Franchises - Friday Four which lists good episodes for first-time viewers watching Stargate, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who. Seeing these are all shows I watch(ed) and enjoy, this post makes me happy. I may not agree with all the choices for first episo...

Zeppelins, Alternate Realities, Doctor Who and Fringe

Image
Some time ago (back in January 2011), I wrote a blog posts about Zeppelins in alternate realities . I used examples from television series Doctor Who and Fringe , two shows that both feature alternate universes. One key way of identifying that characters had gone from the regular universe to an alternate universe was the appearance of Zeppelins in the sky. They weren't travelling through time to go to an era in our past when Zeppelins were common; they were in the current era. Just somewhere a little different from where they were before. " Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more ," those Zeppelins seemed to scream at the viewer. While I did not intend my post to be read as meaning 'both alternate universes in Doctor Who and Fringe are the exact same universe', apparently someone did think that that's what I meant. A link to my blog post appeared on Reddit and suddenly my post got lots and lots of visitors. Please don't get me wrong,...

Vincent van Gogh and Doctor Who

Image
One of my favourite artists is Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890). Not only did he paint an amazing " Starry Night over the Rhone " and a ridiculously beautiful ("Almond Blossom" also known as) " Blossoming Almond Tree ", he also painted many other stunning works that I love. I'm a big fan of colour in life, in nature and in art, which is why I prefer Vincent van Gogh's more colourful and colour-filled works to the darker ones. The darker paintings are often detailed, intricate and very beautiful indeed (just look at " The Potato Eaters "), yet they don't speak to me the same way the more colourful scenes do. However... “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” I certainly believe that to be true, in real life and in Vincent's paintings too! “ Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is some...

Doctor Who series 8, episode 4: "Listen"

Image
What an absolutely brilliant episode of Doctor Who !!!!!! Photo credit: @Nimavenl This series' fourth episode "Listen" was absolutely super-brilliant. Wow, amazing, had me on the edge of my seat for pretty much the entire episode. If only each and every episode could be like this! Superb, wonderful, I don't think I know enough descriptive words to describe how I feel, how much I'm still reeling from watching this episode. It was perfect. Glad I taped it as I'm going to re-watch it right now , this was truly amazing! Doctor Who got scary again and I'm loving it !!!

Doctor Who Hoodie

Image
Source: Old Glory I absolutely love this Doctor Who hoodie! It is so very, very cute! Found this Old Glory Doctor Who hoodie while browsing for Doctor Who items online. Yay for Polyvore / Pinterest and all those amazingly talented users putting outfits together!!! You guys rock and I love viewing the cool themes you come up with!

Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi announced as new Time Lord

I am so super duper excited right now !!!!!!!!!!! According to The Guardian , Glasgow-born actor Peter Capaldi has been named as the 12th Doctor !!!!!!!!!!!! I love his face, I love that he is not a 'young thing' like Matt Smith (who I also loved, by the way!), I absolutely love how he sounds and I simply know that I am going to have soooooooo much fun enjoying this new Doctor. I am sad to see the end of Matt Smith's 11th Doctor, however we all know that every Doctor will eventually regenerate which means that we all knew there would be a 12th Doctor. I wonder what funky foods and cool yet quirky clothes the next Doctor will  have a penchant for! Peter Capaldi has very big shoes to fill, however I am looking forward to seeing his take on the Doctor and can't wait for the Christmas special and new episodes after that!

Fish Fingers and Custard !

Image
Source: DeviantART While browsing the web looking for cute / funny / silly Doctor Who related images, I came across something I'd not seen before. Fish fingers and custard jewellery!  After some very excited fan girl jumping up and down while squealing like a girl (well, not quite due to my heart but close... sort of...) I realised that this was one more for the blog as I simply * have to * share the amazingness!  Source: Etsy The first image from Deviant ART (by way of Google) is a set, which I love. When enjoying the coolness of fish fingers and custard, why not enjoy it in threefold? Also very cool that all three 'bowls' look slightly different.  The second image which is from Etsy (also sourced through Google, of course!) is pretty much the same but slightly different from the earlier three 'bowls' which is why I've included it. I like the silver chain better than the black cord and the third fish finger covered in custard is a cute...

Boots, part two

Image
I am still scrolling through an amazing Tumblr feed entitled Companion Clothing . This feed shows the author / compiler's views of clothes that (possible) Doctor Who companions might wear or have worn. Am definitely enjoying 49 pages (and counting!...) of Who - inspired goodness! Came across these very gorgeous boots on page 41 as part of an outfit. Another case of simply * having to * gush about them! The previous Boots post came from the same Tumblr feed. Please ankle booties   (see more ankle boots )

It's Present Time !!!!!!!!!!!!

Image
Source: The A Factor Shop My super sweet and amazing boyfriend gave me a Doctor Who Tardis key-chain and a "wibbly wobbly timey wimey" / Tardis top to celebrate my surviving open heart surgery almost three weeks ago.  As a huge Doctor Who fan I was super thrilled and yes, I definitely squealed like a teenager. (Well, pretty much... Sort of... Ish?...) While I've been a fan of both Doctor Who and Torchwood for several years, I've never bought or owned any Who merchandise.  Won't be able to use the key-chain for a while as I'm still quite apprehensive about leaving the house while I can barely stand and walk due to the problems with my leg caused by surgery. Won't wear the top yet as I want to keep it looking as spiffy as possible. Still - I am super, super thrilled with my prezzies and can't stop looking at them!  I understand that many other women would have preferred shoes, clothes, handbags or jewellery however I am - thank the Lo...

The Next Doctor

Been thinking about who I'd like to see as the next Doctor Who. A few days ago a friend suggested Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame. Not my first choice as to me he's still Ron Weasley, however perhaps not a bad choice either. When not playing a slightly dumb/daft/pick your word character he might be awesome and a brilliant actor? Would mean finally a ginger doctor so the man himself would quite likely be very happy. Still... We had a ginger Doctor-Donna, a ginger Amy and a ginger River so why do we need a ginger doctor too when he surrounds himself with awesome gingers? For balance? Perhaps. But then a female doctor would be great for balance too! While it'd be a very interesting change to have a female doctor, we've had amazing female characters and companions just as strong, powerful and amazing as the Doctor, so why bother changing genders - let the doctor stay male, it might keep everything easiest. Also, why have just one female incarnation - wouldn't it b...

Whovian Events

As a huge fan of long running TV series Doctor Who, I love reading about Whovian events around the world. I don't mean conventions or dress-up parties - I mean worldwide events that all fans can participate in. One of the Whovian events I adore is Bad Wolf day. Who fans write the words Bad Wolf wherever they can using for instance sidewalk chalk or other non-permanent means. It's not at all about destroying or defacing property - it is about spreading the word one fan at a time and sharing our 'inside joke' with other fans. To learn more about Bad Wolf day, read this Wikipedia article or do a Google search!

Shakespeare on Doctor Who

After writing the previous post about Shakespeare as performed in the Original Pronunciation and watching the video again, I couldn't help but think of British TV series Doctor Who. There's an episode in which the Doctor and his then-companion Martha Jones head to Shakespearian England and meet the Bard himself. In the process they defeat three evil witches, save the future of the world and of course, make sure that dear Will is forever grateful to them. One thing I loved about this episode is that Shakespeare saw the Doctor's psychic paper as blank paper, "confirming to the Doctor that Shakespeare is a genius" as the Wikipedia article for this episode explains. Really should watch this episode again some time soon!

Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who

Gasp. Not unexpected however not entirely expected yet either.  Still processing. Have two more episodes to watch (Never enough time in a day...) and really did NOT want to know this yet. Still - here we are.  I loved the multi-episode goodbye to Ten and hope the goodbye to Eleven will be as amazing as that was. Read all about Matt Smith's final adventures as Doctor Who at the BBC's Blog.

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2012

'Doctor Who' Christmas Special, 'The Snowmen': TV Recap - Speakeasy - WSJ I found this amazing review of Doctor Who's 2012 Christmas Special online. Instead of doing a review of my own, I will simply refer you to the one above. Read it, enjoy it and please accept my apologies for not writing a review of my own.

Doctor Who 2012 Christmas Special

Image
It is December. Finally!!! As a huge Doctor Who fan, one of the things that I love about December (read about others in my previous post!) is that the wait to see the Doctor Who Christmas special is coming to an end! This year, the wait has been a long one! This year, the mid-season finale of the first half of season / series 7 left me crying my eyes out for Amy's heartbreaking decision and her strength of character and for the Doctor's immense loss. On the 29th of September 2012 we said goodbye to Amy and Rory for the very last time. One thing that made the two-month wait more bearable was the speculation about the Doctor's new companion. We met the actress in Asylum of the Daleks as human Oswin Oswald turned Dalek trapped in her own delusion. Or wait, perhaps we met an alternate version of her, or maybe a future version, or even a future child or grandchild... On the 25th of December 2012, we will move on, we will finally get to meet Jenna Louise Coleman's new C...

Silence your Nails

Image
Source: Beauty Geek Saw these A-MA-ZING nails online and simply had to share a pic! Click the link to Beauty Geek for step-by-step instructions on how to create these (yes, I'll say it again...) absolutely amazing The Silence themed nails. Some info for non-Whovians: Undeniably one of the scariest alien races ever introduced on top British TV show Doctor Who, The Silence are a race you see constantly... Only as soon as you're no longer looking at one of them you totally and completely forget seeing them. The Doctor and his companions remember having seen a member of this race by marking themselves. This way, even though they forget about having seen these scary looking men in black suits with very strange faces, they know that they are around...
