Creativity... Possibly...

Wandering around the mall last week, I decided I needed to work on my creativity - and possibly get me a new hobby. A week later, I'm wondering why that crazy thought entered my mind. I read, I write, I do crosswords, I enjoy photography - surely those are good hobbies to have?!

My muse disagreed however, and when I saw a 1000-piece puzzle of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night, I simply had to buy it. I honestly can't remember the last time I completed a puzzle that didn't involve words, so to say that completing this puzzle is a challenge is definitely an understatement! It's a challenge I'm enjoying, however!

As of today, the outside pieces are all in place, as are the bottom left and the top right pieces.

As for the rest... I have about five piles of purple puzzle pieces ranging from pinkish to almost black, a pile each with brownish and blackish pieces, another huge pile of greenish pieces, a bunch of stars ready to be fitted into the whole, and absolutely no idea where to go from here. Still - it keeps me entertained and I'm enjoying myself a lot more than I thought I would!

In the last few weeks, I've also bought a new diary (sort of a tradition of mine - I buy a new diary at the start of a new year), a notebook for writing, a French Knitting / spool knitting set - I used to LOVE doing that as a child, so heck, I might again! - waiting to be unpacked and several books on language, interior design, history and mythology.

I'm actually considering getting a child-size loom next, as weaving was also something I enjoyed as a child. I'm very critical about my own "art" skills, so while I doodle from time to time, I don't draw or paint. Am thinking perhaps paint by numbers, spray painting or stencilling could be very interesting ideas to try out, though!

Another thing I used to really enjoy was knitting. My aunt taught me how to when I was about 10, when I made a huge scarf. It looks strange and lopsided and has plenty of holes in it, however I was extremely proud of my work and very happy with it. Still am, actually!

The last time I did any knitting was with my grandmother's wool after she died in 1999. She used to knit a lot - baby clothes, scarves, shawls - and it was plain to see she definitely enjoyed it. There was wool left over after she died and my way of dealing with her death and saying goodbye to her was to knit a huge scarf with some of the left-over wool. It was a very therapeutic experience with a deeper meaning attached to it, which is why I'm slightly reluctant to take up knitting again. Still, 1999 is a long time ago and I have changed a lot, so it is definitely worth a try!

The aim of the game was to find things that might entertain / educate / interest / occupy me that do not involve sitting at the computer or lounging in front of the TV. So far, it is a success as I'm spending a lot more time reading, writing, puzzling and playing, and a lot less time on Facebook. Definitely a good start to the new year!
