Moscow subway bombings

Watched the news earlier and saw the report on the bombings in the Moscow subway. Or well, bombings - suicide missions actually. Thirty-eight people killed and many wounded because two women felt the need to make a point.
And what was the point about? It seems about the exact same thing so many bombings and attacks around the world have been about: terrorists trying to what, prove a point, scare the world, get support for their cause?

The one thing I just really don't get here is WHY people, human beings just like you and I, feel the need to kill other human beings, innocent ones at that, to help further their cause.
From what I've read on newspaper websites so far no-one has claimed responsibility for this latest attack yet, however apparently Russian authorities believe there is evidence that these attacks were commited by people from the North Caucasus region.
According to CNN.com,
"Our preliminary assessment is that this act of terror was committed by a terrorist group from the North Caucasus region," Alexander Bortnikov of the Federal Security Service said of the investigation at one of the blast sites.

"We consider this the most likely scenario, based on investigations conducted at the site of the blast," Bortnikov said. "Fragments of the suicide bombers' body found at the blast, according to preliminary findings, indicate that the bombers were from the North Caucasus region."
"Although they have yet to claim responsibility, Bortnikov's statement is a strong implication that Chechen rebels fighting for independence were behind the strike".

According to The New Zealand Herald,

Militants in the Caucasus have declared the creation of an Islamic state as their top goal. The militants receive moral and financial support from al-Qaida, which for years has celebrated the Chechen struggle as one of the key fronts for roving Muslim fighters along with Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia.
The militants receive moral and perhaps financial support from al-Qaida. Dozens of contributors to three websites affiliated with al-Qaida wrote comments in praise of Monday's attacks.

One site opened a special page to "receive congratulations" for the Chechen rebels who "started the dark tunnel attacks in the apostate countries," and all wished for God to accept the two sisters as martyrs.

"Don't forget Russia's crimes of genocide in the Caucasus and Chechnya," said one writer. "The battle has been shifted to the heart of Moscow," another wrote.

It seems that once again, Islamic militants are behind an attack on innocent people.

Once again? Yes. Remember the Twin Towers, the London subway bombings, suicide bombings in Israel and the execution of Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh just to name a few.
Is killing and terrorizing innocent people really the best way to prove a point? To get support for your cause? To get more people to buy into your particular world view? To achieve the goals you've set for yourself and your organisation? Really?

Surely there must be smarter ways, better ways, more humane ways to achieve your goals? To achieve a dialogue, to garner support, to gain a wider audience?
Please don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying Islam is bad or that all Muslims are bad or anything along that line. All I'm saying here is that once again, people who call themselves Muslims and say they adhere to Islam seem to be behind a senseless act of murder of innocent people.

The root of the words Islam and Muslim - SLM - is the same root as the word Salaam - Peace. The words are related, and I for one would be a lot happier if people spent more time pondering that point and what that means for Islam (a religion of peace), and less time trying to kill, maim, hurt and destroy each other.
