Reading, Wonderland and a pretty "Precious"
I love language and especially love reading books and stories that play with language or show the author's love for language. Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is one such story. I'd known the story of Alice in Wonderland for years before actually sitting down to read the book as an adult. What struck me was not only how much I enjoyed the fun and craziness of Alice's adventures, but how much I enjoyed the author's way with words. The simple yet exquisite beauty of the words on the page as they come together into a whimsical whole is simply amazing to me.
I also love tales set in magical or fantastical worlds like the amazing Anne Bishop's Black Jewels books or J. R. R. Tolkien's extremely intricate world of Middle Earth. Alternate realities are very interesting to explore as well, worlds that are similar to yet different from our own. I like how they often provide great insights into our own world and our own thinking, despite some of the more obvious differences like magic, time travel or Zeppelins, for instance. The Ancient Future series by Traci Harding and the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon are great examples, if in different ways.
Having mentioned some of my favourite fantasy series and authors, I now have to mention two of my favourite urban fantasy writers as well - Patricia Briggs and Laurell K. Hamilton both create amazing worlds that continue to draw me in, book after book. They also create strong and independent female characters who are good at their jobs, follow their hearts and defeat monsters and bad guys simply because it is the right thing to do. They don't mind dirt or broken nails and while some certainly love pretty dresses, they also care about more than just clothing, looks and being 'attractive' or 'popular'.
While I am not a vampire hunter or a mechanic, I am certainly not the most fashion-conscious person either and care a lot more about what's on the inside than on the outside. However I do love (looking at and sometimes drooling over) accessories like shoes and rings and can spend hours adoring pretty 'princessy' dresses. Never mind that I'd probably never (have a reason to) wear them or be able to afford them! I especially love particularly kooky, crazy, over the top or slightly strange accessories that remind me of fairy-tales or scenes from books or movies or superheroes or... (You get my point, I hope!)

| Alice in Wonderland ring | Dose.com |
This gorgeous Alice in Wonderland-inspired ring comes from a collection I found over at Dose.com's 22 Amazing Rings That Anyone Would Be Honored To Wear On Their Finger article which features lots of cute rings. The Alice in Wonderland rings are gorgeous however I also love (the first) #five and #fifteen while #seventeen would be perfect if I ever wanted to attend a Star Trek themed event as Seven of Nine. Speaking of - I remember seeing a very cute Star Trek ring somewhere... I'll go see if I can find a photo of that...
