Defiance: Nichole Galicia Interview Quotes

It's Friday! That means a new episode of Defiance! And a Twitter feed full of references to Castithans, Irathients, Indogenes and Omec. And a lot of other things, including marriage and food... Not a bad way to spend my Friday evening - my inner geek / nerd / sci-fi fan(atic) is happy! To start off this Defiance Friday, I read an interview with Nichole Galicia. She plays Kindzi - one of the new aliens this season. As the actress explains in the interview, she was in New Zealand at the time of her audition. Due to the distance and the time difference with the rest of the world, her entire audition was done by taping herself. Now that is dedication and a lot of hard work!
"This role was meant to be mine because that never happens. So when I was booked I did what I do to research every role, I started in a museum."
As if reading that the actress was in New Zealand didn't already make me jealous, reading that she went to one of my favourite places didn't help either! I haven't been home in almost four years (due to getting sick, needing surgery, recovery taking a long time and all the financial worries that come with being sick and unemployed for a long time) and apart from a few hours at the airport, haven't been in Auckland in almost six years. Yes, time flies. Now, back to the Nichole Galicia interview
The foundation of all my characters are based in art, it is where I find my inspiration. So I immediately went to the Auckland Art Gallery and to my surprise there Kindzi was on the wall: face tattoo, spear, regal garb and fearless attitude. My Kindzi is a Maori warrior at heart.
Of course Kindzi isn't just based on a painting of a Maori woman in an art gallery in Auckland. However that Nichole Galicia's Kindzi sort-of started in New Zealand, I like that. A lot.  The actress explains that she didn't approach playing an alien any differently than she would have approached a human character as aliens and humans have the same basic needs.
What I did do was I layered an animal into my character. There is a lot of cat, in Kindzi. A big cat, like a shiny black panther that when she smiles at you, there is a sparkly “ting” in her fangs. Unfortunately if you are close enough to see her fangs you are probably dinner.

Alternatively (or do both, much more fun that way!) visit Nichole Galicia on Twitter where she helps Defiance fans learn the Omec language and Tweets about who she'd like to eat...
