Photo Challenge #15 - Pre-Challenge Musings
On the 25th of August I posted a blog entry about photographer Nicole S. Young's 10-day #StayOutThere challenge. Inspired by the topics she chose to cover for her challenge, I decided to see if I could 'do' her Challenge as well, my own way. The topics Nicole S. Young chose for the ten days of her Challenge:
01: Sky
02: Flower
03: Water
04: Blur
05: Texture
06: Farmer's Market
07: Summer
08: Play
09: Shade
10: Reflection
In my earlier post, I mentioned that finding a Farmer's Market (#06) might be challenging. However, I did figure out a possible alternative. There is a carnival / fair going on in my city at the moment. It may not be a Farmer's Market however it does have a lot of interesting-looking attractions. A walk through the Kermis might be a good substitute for a Farmer's Market. I faced another challenge when deciding on a topic to photograph for #08: Play. In the past, I've written that I don't like taking photos of people without permission (I'm trying to find that post so I can link to it here!) and much prefer nature / landscape / cityscape photography to taking photos of people. The (perhaps?) obvious choice to photograph children playing in a playground doesn't suit my style. So, how do I convey Play through a photo? I could write the word Play and take a photo of the word, however that doesn't seem creative enough. Neither does taking a photo of the word on a television screen or the "Play" button on the remote control. Sure, it suits the writer / blogger side of my personality to take a photo of a word, however the photographer part of me strongly objects. This challenge is not about taking photos of pieces of paper, she chides me. Or if 'she' were real, she might... (grin)
Nicole S. Young started her Challenge on the 24th of August. As I write this (on Friday morning), she's posted four photos. She'll post her last photo on Wednesday the second of September, meaning that if I want to post this Challenge on Sunday (two days from now) I'll be posting my photos before Nicole Young's finished her ten photos. Seeing I like the idea of checking out the other Nicole's photos of both the Farmer's Market (#06) and Play (#08) and finding inspiration through her photos, it seems rather silly to post my own photos before I've even gotten a look at her photos. For me, taking part in someone else's challenge isn't about doing the Challenge at the same time as another but about being inspired by someone else and their creative thinking.
So, my choice is this: Do I split the Challenge into two parts (1-5 and 6-10) for two weeks, or do I make Nicole Young's Challenge next week's Photo Challenge topic? Decisions, decisions... Perhaps by Sunday I'll have it all figured out! As I'm writing this, I'm tempted to split the Challenge into two parts, perhaps sharing two or even three photos per 'day' of the Challenge as posting only five photos doesn't feel quite right. Something tells me I'll be posting a 'half Challenge' this coming Sunday...
