The Trouble with Twitter

What's the deal with people who follow you on Twitter and then unfollow you almost straight away?

I'll get an email that such and such has subscribed to my Twitter feed, that they are interested in what I've got to say, in what I'm doing or thinking about, in the photos I share... Yet I click on the link to their profile in the email and where it should say "Follows You", it doesn't say that. Which means people followed my account only to unfollow me again almost straight away. Leaves me to wonder: Why do that?

I'm not a celebrity or a famous author or a politician or a well-known journalist or anything of the sort. I'm opinionated and straightforward and not afraid to speak up, however that's not unique to me. I speak two languages, call two countries home, enjoy being a citizen of the world, enjoy knowing what it's like to have lived elsewhere, to have experienced life in different countries. Also not unique. I am interested in the world, in climate change and global warming, languages and cultures and world religions, in nature and life and being a good person who cares for and about the planet. Again, not unique either. Yet apparently good enough?

I love learning about religion, history, politics, mythology, sociology. I love learning about the different people in our world, different viewpoints and beliefs, love taking photos and sharing them, love how varied and beautiful our world is and the people of our world are. I'm just me - a human being, female, thinker, Aspie, heart patient, Dutch, Kiwi, photographer, blogger, writer, friend, sister and daughter. I love writing down my thoughts and sharing my views and my photos and explaining my thinking... Yet apparently I'm interesting enough to follow for a moment but not interesting enough to follow for longer than that moment.

When people follow and then unfollow straight away, is following me and other new people only about getting us to visit their profile? Because in the time it takes for me to visit Twitter, the new follower has already unfollowed me. Doesn't really inspire me to follow them, somehow. Just leaves me wondering Huh? What's all that about? The way I see it - Either you want to follow someone or you don't. It is that simple. If you want people to read what you write, view your photos, follow your links or subscribe to your Twitter feed, then make sure people can find you. But following someone only to unfollow them moments later... That's not the way to get new followers. Right?
