From space, our planet is truly an amazing place

As a child, I dreamed of being an astronaut. Of seeing our planet from space, walking on the moon, leaving behind everything down here on earth. I wanted to explore, to travel, to see sights few others had ever seen with their own eyes. I wanted to know what it would feel like to be out there, floating in the darkness of space, weightless, far away from everything I had ever known or would ever know. These days I only dream of being an astronaut when I'm asleep. Yet others turned their childhood dreams into reality. American astronaut Scott Kelly is one of those people. He doesn't live his dream alone but shares it with the world, giving all of us down here on earth a glimpse of what life in space is really like. I can say one thing for certain - the photos Scott Kelly shares amaze, awe and inspire me. Our planet truly is an amazing place! For an instant before sunrise, the space station glows orange. #GoodMorning from @Space_Station ! #YearInSpace pic.twitter.com/FEXx8...

My heart goes out to the people of Paris

Image
I wake up earlier than planned and see a world that is shining brightly. Everything around me is bathed in shades of purple, orange, red and pink. High above, the clouds stand out in a sky that seems to be on fire. Far below my balcony the wet streets reflect the fire-like colours above. I wonder - Is the world celebrating? Is the Source of All showing off just a bit? Is the sky dressed up in anticipation of a celebration? Is today special somehow, unique or amazing? I ponder the possibilities as slowly reality sets in. Before going to bed I heard the news from Paris. Forty people dead. Perhaps a hundred held hostage. Panic and mayhem and men with guns on the streets. I stand on my balcony listening to the silence. The pit-pat of rain coming down on the near-empty streets. Birds soaring past greeting the dawn of another day. It is peaceful and quiet where I stand. And yet. Only hours away chaos and terror reign. Only hours ago, over a hundred people died. The news tells me the deat...

Photo Challenge #17 - More Misty Morning Magic

Image
Some more photos from last month's outing-with-camera in the mist. Not quite a separate Challenge but hey... It's been challenging lately to find the time to take and edit photos so I say it counts. Right?! Either way: YAY! I managed to write and publish a Photo Challenge post on a Sunday! It's been a while. Enjoy!!!

Photo Challenge #16 - Misty Morning Magic

Image
After posting a single photo as a preview of this newest Photo Challenge last week , here are some of the other photos. I hope you enjoy the beauty of a misty morning. As is evident, I haven't written a Photo Challenge post every week, haven't written a proper Photo Challenge post for some time now. Yes, creating a Photo Challenge for this blog was meant in part to challenge me to go out there and take photos, however I've just not felt inspired lately. Walking around with a camera, attempting to see the beauty all around, sharing that beauty - All that sounds great in theory, however doesn't always work out in real life. Sometimes you're just too tired or drained. Sometimes you have a period when seeing the beauty is hard. Sometimes you feel let down by others and taking photos takes too much emotional effort. Sometimes you look at what is happening in the world and feel like taking photos of beautiful scenes is pointless. Sometimes you wonder why you even bothe...

Photo Challenge #16 - Preview - Misty Morning Magic

Image
Even though taking photos or posting Photo Challenges hasn't been on my priority list lately, there is something about a misty morning that is hard to resist. Knowing that the sun is shining behind the 'smokescreen' and waiting for that perfect moment when whatever you're taking photos of looks just right in the light... Here's one of the photos I took last Sunday. Isn't our world beautiful, stunning and amazing?!

Photo Challenge Posts - Challenging myself doesn't always work, it seems...

Another weekend approaches and I am reminding myself that I still need to update my blog to add the right photos to not just one but two "Photo Challenge" posts. Actually, I haven't even posted the second Challenge post yet - even though it was supposed to be on my blog some five days ago - and still need to do that. How bad is that? I promised myself and my readers / visitors that I'd post photos every weekend yet haven't done so. Which means I've let myself down, and my readers and visitors too. As I go through my emails and read articles online, I try to gently nudge myself towards my laptop's "Pictures" folder. That's where the photos live once I've downloaded them from my camera onto my laptop. That's where I need to go. That's where I need to direct my attention. Yet knowing I need to do something and actually doing it are two very different things. I'm not usually this bad with sticking to my promises, with following ...

My Inner Geek Rejoices

I know, I know... It's been around for quite some time and I'm only discovering it now... I'm late to the party! But... That doesn't mean I can't gush about it! Retro Phase Shift is a science fiction blog with lots of posts about (just to name a few shows) Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Defiance, Babylon 5 and Torchwood. Just reading the names of some of my favourite shows and knowing that others enjoy them too, makes me happy. Yes, really. (Is this a good moment to insert an "oh, the feels" comment? No? Ah, okay...) Reading some of the posts on this blog is even better than just reading about the blog's existence. Take for instance 4 Good Entry Points to Big Franchises - Friday Four which lists good episodes for first-time viewers watching Stargate, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who. Seeing these are all shows I watch(ed) and enjoy, this post makes me happy. I may not agree with all the choices for first episo...

Photo Challenge #15 - Somebody Else's Challenge

In my last Challenge-related post, I wrote about choosing a topic for this week's Photo Challenge. I wrote that I would most likely choose to go with the first five topics of photographer Nicole S. Young's 10-day #StayOutThere Challenge . I hope it won't come as too big a surprise that that's exactly what I chose to do. This week's Photo Challenge blog post features photos covering the following topics, as inspired by Nicole S. Young's Challenge: 01: Sky 02: Flower 03: Water 04: Blur 05: Texture Quick update: Photos will be posted soon - I hope. It's been a stressful week and sitting down to edit photos (to get rid of the spots and scratches on my camera's lens) has not been a priority. Here are links to the photos that Nicole S. Young took: Sky Flower Water Blur Texture I hope that despite the lateness of this week's Photo Challenge photos, you will enjoy the photos when they do appear!

Photo Challenge #15 - Pre-Challenge Musings

On the 25th of August I posted a blog entry about photographer Nicole S. Young's 10-day #StayOutThere challenge . Inspired by the topics she chose to cover for her challenge, I decided to see if I could 'do' her Challenge as well, my own way. The topics Nicole S. Young chose for the ten days of her Challenge: 01: Sky 02: Flower 03: Water 04: Blur 05: Texture 06: Farmer's Market 07: Summer 08: Play 09: Shade 10: Reflection In my earlier post, I mentioned that finding a Farmer's Market (#06) might be challenging. However, I did figure out a possible alternative. There is a carnival / fair going on in my city at the moment. It may not be a Farmer's Market however it does have a lot of interesting-looking attractions. A walk through the Kermis might be a good substitute for a Farmer's Market. I faced another challenge when deciding on a topic to photograph for #08: Play. In the past, I've written that I don't like taking photos of people without p...

Baby Pandas Are Ridiculously Cute

Baby animals are cute. How many people can resist smiling when faced with adorable kittens and gorgeous puppies? Maybe it's just this photo but I think I may have found my all-time 'favourite baby animal' because baby pandas are ridiculously cute, gorgeous and adorable! #DYK . Nicole S. Young's #StayOutThere Photo Challenge

Photographer Nicole S. Young recently partnered with Adobe for a #StayOutThere 10-day Photography Challenge. She shares her images online every day and explains her reasons for participating in the challenge on her blog / website:   " Over the next ten days, I am partnering with Adobe for a “#StayOutThere 10-Day Photography Challenge” to help you look for new ways to invigorate your photography! Each day I will share a photo that fits in with a daily theme (see the next section for more info). Please follow along with my posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to view my interpretations of each daily theme, and don’t forget to share your own images as well! How To "Fix" The World In Five Simple Steps...

While I'm not a self-help guru, a Professor or a researcher, I am a reader and a blogger - someone who sees a lot of articles online with titles like " Five steps to a new you" or " Six ways to change the world" or " Seven things you need to know right now!"  Most of the time, titles like that make me laugh. After all, the whatever-many steps that worked for whoever wrote the article may not work for me or anyone else. This blog post is entitled "How To Fix The World In Five Simple Steps" not because I believe that these five steps will actually 'fix' the world but precisely because titles like this one make me laugh. Because they make me curious yet also make me think Let's see what this author comes up with... These five steps may not fix the world, however I hope this article will make you think. Step One: What works for you may not work for another Realise that your system, *your* way of seeing the world, of believing, of ...

Photo Challenge #14 - Nature Up Close, Continued

Image
This week's Photo Challenge used photos taken on the same day and at the same location as last week's Photo Challenge photos. In a way, they're more of the same - photos of nature taken around the Noord Holland area in The Netherlands. Reading... And not much else...

I've been reading a lot the last few weeks. I wrote about it briefly - in this 09 August 2015 post - however didn't elaborate all that much. I haven't even updated Goodreads (which is where I keep track of what I read and want to read) to show or share what I'm reading. Those who know me won't be surprised that I'm reading Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series and loving it. Starting to get to the last few books and have to say I almost want to take a break from reading just so the series will last longer! All this reading means I haven't been blogging much, haven't shared many posts on Twitter and have barely updated Facebook. And honestly, while I try to keep up to date with what's going on in the real world, I find myself thinking more about what's going on in MZB's fictional world than our real one. So, here's a quick post today with a few quotes about reading... The quotes were all found on Goodreads . “The more that you ...

Photo Challenge #13 - Nature, Up Close and Personal

Image
It's Tuesday evening and I'm writing a Photo Challenge post. Honestly, I'm a little amazed with myself. Instead of trying to come up with a topic on Saturday and posting photos on Sunday, I'm actually starting 'early' this week and posting the first photos on Tuesday! (Heck, I might even try to add a photo every day this week to have a complete post on Sunday. No guarantees though...) Enjoy nature up close and personal this week! Sunday Update: I've added more photos!   Thistles, horizontal Cows in a field Thistles, vertical Just a field
