There are two types of writers...
“There are two types of writers: those who make you think and those who make you dream”
~ Brian Aldiss
In context: “There are two types of writers: those who make you think and those who make you dream” says Brian Aldiss, who made me dream for such a long time with his science-fiction books. In principle I believe that every human being on this planet has at least one good story to tell his neighbor.
Paulo Coelho on How You Can Become a Better Writer | Time Magazine
I've read my fair share of books - good ones, great ones, unforgettable ones, awful ones, tearjerkers, page-turners... Some books resonate with me more than others, some I remember better than others, some I simply can't put down. When it comes to my favourite writers, they all write books that fall into the 'can't put down' category. Because I want to know what happens next, on the next page and in the next chapter.
All writers on my 'favourite writers' list write books that make me dream. Yet what's amazing about them is that they also write books that make me think. That's what makes them favourite writers - they challenge me to think about life, to dream, to imagine, to consider things I'd not considered before, to explore strange new worlds and civilisations, to boldly go... Wait, no, that's a different article, however the words work for this article too. Favourite writers pen stories that become a part of my life, that give me new ways to think about the world and allow me to dream about how life could be, how our world could be, how humanity could be... Their books aren't just things I consume and forget about, they become a part of who I am. Two of my favourite writers are Traci Harding and Anne Bishop, inspiring women who write stories that make me dream, make me think, give me hope and make me want to jump straight into the worlds they create. Each and every time. They always keep me coming back for more because I know, without a doubt, that I will love their next book or story. On that note, one more absolutely awesome and amazing quote from the article by Paulo Coelho. Because my favourite writers embody this quote: Through their books they share their dreams and visions, their hopes and fears, their aspirations and yes, even their souls.
[Advice] On critics: Some writers want to please their peers, they want to be “recognized.” This shows insecurity and nothing else, please forget about this. You should care to share your soul and not to please other writers.
